Toda una vida en el mar
Brisa Hennessy, nació en San José, Costa Rica, en 1999. Su madre es hawaiana y su padre californiano,
Durante los primeros nueve años de su vida, Hennessy se crió cerca del océano y de la selva tropical, por lo que siempre ha pertenecido al mar.
“Vivíamos totalmente desconectados, completamente en la jungla. Había monos en nuestro patio trasero y todo tipo de animales que te puedas imaginar. Vivíamos justo en la playa y realmente me formó como persona. Nací en el océano. Mis padres dirigían una escuela de surf y el surf simplemente corre por mi sangre”, declaró al sitio web de Tokyo 2020.
Cuando tenía nueve años, Brisa, se mudó a Hawaii, donde empezó a competir, y desde hace unos años su familia se instaló en Fiyi. Como nómada –más ahora como surfista profesional-, su vida está empacada en una maleta, pero su hogar es donde sea que esté su familia.
“Mi familia y yo nos llamamos nómadas sin hogar. Prácticamente no tenemos un domicilio. Vivimos con una maleta. Ahora tengo mi maleta aquí, pero siempre estoy lista para mudarme. Pero si estoy con mi familia, siento que estoy en casa”, contó.
Además de hogar, la familia, en su caso, también significa mucho surf.
Amante del Medio Ambiente
Prácticamente, el mar es su principal hábitat, y es por eso que la consciencia y la preservación ambiental son temas importantes para la surfista nacional.
“El mar es mi amor, el mar es para los animales, necesitamos proteger todo lo que se puede. Costa Rica está haciendo mucho, pero necesitamos que todos los países del mundo hagan todo lo que podamos. Es muy importante porque tenemos solamente un mundo y un mar”, acotó al periódico La República.
“Necesitamos cambiar y amar nuestro planeta”, recuerda en sus redes sociales.
Entre las mejores surfistas del mundo
Dos veces campeona en el Mundial Juvenil de 2016 y 2017 (con Hawái), Hennessy es una de las jóvenes promesas del surf internacional.
Con el estilo ‘Pura vida’ tan característico de Costa Rica, ascendió rápidamente en los rankings mundiales y, a finales de la temporada 2018, clasificó al CT (Championship Tour) de la World Surf League (WSL), compitiendo entre las mejores surfistas del mundo. Entre sus resultados más destacados está su tercer puesto en el Corona Bali Protected en 2019. En las QS (Qualifying Series) terminó en lo más alto en dos oportunidades: Open Surfing pres by Hurley (2018) y Corona Open China (2020).
Actualmente la costarricense ocupa el 15° puesto en la WSL, y este año lleva cinco top 10 en seis presentaciones en el CT.
En Tokyo 2020, la joven no pudo avanzar a las semifinales, pese a que dejó alma vida y corazón en la playa de Tsurigasaki. La nacional logró posicionarse entre las mejores ocho surfistas de los Juegos Olímpicos con una excelente muestra de surfing en el más alto nivel.
