WhatsApp: ¿existe diferencia entre ‘xD’, ‘xd’, ‘XDDDD’ y demás variantes?
‘XD’ es uno de los emoticones más adoptados. Quizá por eso es que existen muchas variables de la misma idea. ¿En qué se diferencian?
WhatsApp goza de ser la aplicación de mensajería más popular para chatear con amigos, por lo que constantemente aumenta su número de opciones y características, como los emojis, stickers y demás elementos para expresarse. Aun así, los clásicos emoticones como ‘xD’ no han perdido vigencia y son parte del léxico coloquial de millones de personas. Este tiene una particularidad: muchos suelen escribirlo de distinta manera, como ‘xD’, ‘XD’ o incluso como ‘XDDDD’. ¿Existe una diferencia importante?
Debemos recordar que ‘xD’ es una de las expresiones más antiguas entre las que se conocen como emojis basados en texto. Estos se hicieron populares en Japón (hace cerca de dos décadas) y también son conocidos como ‘text faces’.
La costumbre oriental de utilizar el arte ASCII para simular muecas faciales se extendió también a occidente, y ‘XD’ fue una de las más antiguas. Existen reportes de que esta ‘carita’ se hizo popular en los chats de AIM. Pese a esto, la mayoría de portales apuntan que su origen exacto es un misterio, y que recién apareció en el Urban Dictionary (un conocido recopilatorio online de expresiones coloquiales en inglés) en el año 2003.
A pesar de ello, no es muy difícil entender por qué ‘xD’ fue creado, ni por qué se volvió tan popular. En primer lugar, su esencia es completamente representativa. La ‘x’ simboliza un par de ojos ‘chinos’ cerrándose en expresión de ‘no aguantar’, mientras que la ‘D’ (mayúscula) simula una larga sonrisa. En combinación, ‘xD’ emula una cara riéndose, muy parecida a los modismos ‘lol’, ‘rofl’, ‘lmao’, etc.
Sin embargo, muchas personas suelen escribir la ‘d’ en minúscula en WhatsApp y otras plataformas, especialmente cuando lo hacen desde un teléfono móvil. Otras, en cambio, colocan más de una letra final, y así existen muchas combinaciones posibles del ‘xD’, entre las que destacan:

¿Existe una diferencia marcada entre cada una de estas expresiones de WhatsApp? Para responderlo, debemos nuevamente hurgar en el origen más lejano. ‘xD’ nació gracias al símbolo ‘(>.<)’, que se popularizó en los mangas japoneses. Al ser una representación literal del arte ASCII, podemos deducir que las variantes que existen hoy también responden al mismo cometido.
En ese sentido, podemos interpretar que la ‘d’ puede simular ya no una gran sonrisa, sino una lengua, como también podría ser que el usuario estuvo escribiendo con prisa o de un celular y no tuvo tiempo para colocar la mayúscula correspondiente.
En cuanto a ‘XD’, se puede llegar a la misma conclusión, pero mayor es la disyuntiva al interpretar ‘xDDD’ o ‘XDDD’ e incluso ‘xDDdd’. ¿Por qué se colocan más letra al final? La propia Real Academia Española habla de repeticiones para “reflejar sostenimiento en el habla”, sin mencionar precisamente una hipérbole de la expresión. Aun con esto, podemos deducir que, si bien ‘D’ no es una vocal, sí es una ‘sonrisa’ y, en este caso, repetirla podría ser equivalente a ‘alargar la sonrisa’ o colocar una sonrisa mucho más grande y expresiva.
Entonces, ¿son estas las razones por las que a veces colocamos ‘xD’ de distintas maneras? Al no existir un consenso oficial ni escrito, asegurar esto es imposible, pues siempre podrá haber alguien que tenga una interpretación diferente. Pero sí demuestra que el sentido de este emoticón es uno de los más fáciles de percibir por los usuarios. De lo contrario, las variantes no serían tan naturales.
