El tifón más atroz del año toca tierra en Filipinas con vientos de “violencia catastrófica”

Al menos siete personas murieron en Filipinas tras el paso del tifón Goni, el más poderoso y atroz de este año, que se abatió este domingo 1 de noviembre sobre el archipiélago.

El tifón tocó tierra en la isla de Catanduanes con vientos de hasta 225 km/h y ráfagas a 310 km/h que arrancaron tejados, árboles y provocaron inundaciones.
Unas horas antes de alcanzar al archipiélago, Goni entró en la categoría de supertifón, pero al avanzar sobre la isla de Luzón, en dirección a Manila, perdió fuerza, según la agencia meteorológica filipina.
En las próximas 12 horas se esperan “vientos de una violencia catastrófica y lluvias intensas y torrenciales” en la región de Bícol, en el sureste de la isla de Luzón y en la de Catanduanes, advirtió la agencia. “Es una situación particularmente peligrosa para estas regiones”, agregó.
En Catanduanes, la situación es “extremadamente peligrosa”, ya que se teme un aumento del nivel del mar de hasta tres metros y “daños catastróficos debidos al viento”.
Varias de estas víctimas perecieron en avalanchas de barro volcánico que arrollaron dos pueblos cercanos al volcán activo Mayon.
En Manila, la capital, los habitantes de algunas barriadas situadas en zonas poco elevadas fueron evacuados ante el riesgo de inundaciones, y el aeropuerto estaba cerrado. Las escuelas, cerradas debido a la pandemia, se han convertido en refugios de emergencia, así como los centros de evacuación administrados por el Gobierno y los gimnasios.
La crisis sanitaria complica aún más la situación, puesto que numerosos recursos de emergencia ya están destinados a la lucha contra el coronavirus. El archipiélago suma oficialmente más de 378.000 casos de coronavirus y 7.100 decesos.
Los filipinos se ven afectados cada año por un promedio de una veintena de tormentas tropicales y tifones, que destruyen cosechas, casas precarias e infraestructuras, manteniendo a poblaciones enteras en la pobreza permanente.
La peor tormenta de la historia reciente fue en 2013. El tifón Haiyan causó más de 7.300 muertos, sobre todo en la ciudad central de Tacloban, que quedó sumergida por olas gigantes.
