Hallan gigantesco arrecife de coral del tamaño del Empire State
Científicos hallaron un arrecife de coral de más de 500 metros de alto, es más alto que el Empire State, y se localiza al norte de la Gran Barrera de Coral en Australia.
El descubrimiento de un gigantesco arrecife de coral se dio en el extremo norte de la Gran Barrera de Coral de Australia, el primero en su tipo en 120 años, según científicos.
El arrecife de coral mide más de 500 metros de altura, más alto que el rascacielos Empire Stare o que las Torres Gemelas Petronas, en Kuala Lumpur, Malasia.
De acuerdo con los científicos, la misión intentó mapear en 3D el suelo marino del área cuando encontraron la estructura, la semana pasada.
El enorme arrecife está separado de la Gran Barrera de Coral, frente a la península de Cape York. Se encuentra de manera vertical, en forma de “cuchilla” y fue encontrado desde un barco propiedad de la organización Schmidt Ocean Institute de California.

Para realizar el mapeo en 3D utilizaron un robot submarino para explorar el arrecife, el aparato nombrado SuBastian, envió las imágenes de video en directo del descubrimiento y las publicó en YouTube.
“Encontrar un nuevo arrecife de medio kilómetro de alto en el área del litoral de Cape York de la bien conocida Gran Barrera de Coral revela lo misterioso que es el mundo más allá de nuestra costa”, dijo la doctora Jyotika Virmani, directora ejecutiva de SOI.
Además, mencionó que la combinación de datos de mapeo e imágenes submarinas se usará para atender este nuevo arrecife y su función dentro de la increíble área de patrimonio de la humanidad de la Gran Barrera de Coral.
Este arrecife de coral es el más grande del mundo y alberga más de mil 500 especies de peces, 411 especies de corales y decenas de otras.
