La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) reportó un aumento récord en los casos de coronavirus al nivel mundial, tras registrarse un total de 230.370 en las últimas 24 horas.
Estados Unidos, Brasil, India y Sudáfrica han reportado los mayores incrementos en el número de nuevos contagios, según un informe diario del organismo. El récord anterior de la OMS para nuevos casos fue de 228.102, el 10 de julio. La cifra de muertes se mantuvo constante, en alrededor de 5.000 por día.
El director ejecutivo para Emergencias Sanitarias de la OMS, Mike Ryan, afirmó que es poco probable que se pueda erradicar o eliminar el nuevo coronavirus. El funcionario recalcó la importancia de extinguir los puntos de infección. De esta manera, el mundo podría “potencialmente evitar lo peor de tener segundos picos” de contagios y verse obligado a retomar medidas de confinamiento y bloqueos.
Esta misma semana, el director general de la OMS, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, aseguró que el brote de covid-19 se está acelerando y todavía no se ha alcanzado el pico de la pandemia.
