Bill Gates pide distribuir vacunas de la COVID-19 a los más necesitados y no a quienes paguen más
El fundador de Microsoft dijo que se le ganará al coronavirus, porque los investigadores están haciendo «grandes progresos».
El multimillonario estadounidense Bill Gates se dijo “optimista” en cuanto a la lucha contra la COVID-19, y pidió distribuir los medicamentos y las vacunas a quienes los necesitan y no a los que más paguen.
“Si dejamos que los medicamentos y las vacunas vayan a los que ofrecen más, en vez de a las personas que más los necesitan, tendremos una pandemia más larga, más injusta y más mortífera”, dijo el fundador de Microsoft, en un mensaje de video en una conferencia virtual internacional sobre el coronavirus, que se celebró como prolongación de la conferencia sobre el sida, también virtual.
El filántropo, dedicado a la lucha contra las epidemias, destacó que la pandemia había interrumpido las cadenas de suministro de medicamentos, incluidos los del sida, lo que podría “privar a cientos de miles de personas de los tratamientos que necesitan, y no solo en el África subsahariana”.
“Pero sigo siendo optimista”, agregó Bill Gates. “Vamos a ganar contra la COVID-19 y seguiremos avanzando contra el sida y otras crisis sanitarias”.
La segunda razón de su optimismo, añadió, es la solidaridad a escala mundial, ya manifestada en la lucha contra el sida, con el Fondo Mundial creado en 2002, y el programa de ayuda americano PEPFAR, lanzado por George W. Bush y destinado sobre todo al África subsahariana.
