El tratamiento con protones, aplicado en un menor con un cuadro de cáncer, resultó exitoso por primera vez en España. La paciente Ahinara, de 6 años, fue operada mediante esta novedosa técnica en la flamante Unidad de Protonterapia de la Clínica Universitaria de Navarra y ahora permanece en reposo por algunas semanas, antes de ser sometida a sesiones de quimioterapia en Pamplona.
La niña presentó los primeros síntomas en su casa de Ecuador en noviembre de 2019. Una resonancia magnética realizada en el Hospital de Guayaquil detectó un tumor cerebral agresivo y los médicos decidieron operarla en forma urgente. El sarcoma cerebral es frecuente en Latinoamérica y atípico en Europa. Si bien la cirugía dio buen resultado, el caso de Ahinara requería un tratamiento de mayor envergadura, por lo cual fue llevada a España.
La técnica con protones es considerada más precisa y con menos efectos secundarios que la radioterapia. En lugar de fotones para tratar el tumor utiliza protones de alta energía, partículas muy pesadas que evitan la aplicación dispersa en órganos y tejidos vecinos.
Desde la inauguración del servicio especializado en abril pasado, la clínica del País Vasco atendió a treinta enfermos, ocho de los cuales son niños. Antes de que fueran puestos en funcionamiento las dos unidades de Protonterapia que ahora hay en España, los pacientes eran derivados a centros de Suiza y Alemania.
La Sociedad Española de Oncología Radioterápica estimó en 30 mil euros la erogación que implica ese tratamiento fuera del país, además de los gastos de traslado y alojamiento durante alrededor de un mes y medio, que debía pagar cada familia.
