EE.UU. compra casi todos los suministros mundiales de un fármaco contra el covid-19 para los próximos tres meses
El anuncio significa que ningún otro país aparte de EE.UU. podrá comprar remdesivir al menos hasta octubre
El Gobierno de EE.UU. ha adquirido prácticamente todas las existencias de remdesivir, uno de los dos medicamentos que han demostrado efectividad contra el covid-19, según se desprende de un comunicado del Departamento de Salud y Servicios Sociales del país, publicado este lunes.
«El presidente Trump ha alcanzado un acuerdo increíble para garantizar que los estadounidenses tengan acceso al primer fármaco autorizado para [tratar] el covid-19. En la medida de lo posible, queremos garantizar que cualquier paciente estadounidense que necesite remdesivir pueda obtenerlo», declaró el secretario del Departamento de Salud, Alex Azar.
El remdesivir, que inicialmente fue desarrollado para tratar el ébola, es producido exclusivamente por el gigante farmacéutico estadounidense Gilead Sciences y tiene un precio de alrededor de 3.200 dólares por tratamiento de seis dosis.
«El Departamento de Salud garantiza más de 500.000 cursos de tratamiento del medicamento para hospitales estadounidenses hasta septiembre», señaló el organismo. Esto representa el 100 % de la producción de Gilead para julio y el 90 % de la de agosto y septiembre.
EE.UU. sigue siendo el país más afectado por la pandemia de coronavirus con más de 2.636.000 casos confirmados y más de 127.400 muertes, según los datos de la Universidad Johns Hopkins.
