Empresa china garantiza 99% de posibilidades de que su vacuna contra la COVID-19 funcione
La empresa china de biotecnología detrás de la potencial vacuna CoronaVac anunció que están construyendo una planta comercial para entregar desde ahí 100 millones de dosis
Sinovac, una compañía china de biotecnología con sede en Pekín, es una de muchas que trata de dar con una vacuna contra el nuevo coronavirus. Sin embargo, a diferencia de las otras, este viernes 29 de mayo mostró su confianza en que la suya será exitosa contra el SARS-CoV-2.
El medio británico Sky News visitó sus laboratorios en China y conversó en exclusiva con Luo Baishan, investigador de Sinovac. Entre otras cosas le preguntó si consideraba que la vacuna que desarrollan actualmente funcionará contra el SARS-CoV-2, causante de la enfermedad COVID-19.
“Sí, sí. Debe ser exitoso… 99 % (seguro)”, respondió Luo, confiado de que la vacuna en que trabaja la firma (llamada CoronaVac) arrojará los resultados esperados en China y en el mundo.
El mes pasado Sinovac informó en la revista académica Science que la CoronoVac es eficaz tras haber protegido a unos monos de la infección del coronavirus. Actualmente se encuentra en ensayos de etapa 2 y participan más de 1.000 voluntarios.
No obstante, la drástica disminución de los casos positivos de COVID-19 en China es una dificultad para las pruebas que la empresa necesita hacer. Ante esto, buscan opciones en otras naciones para arrancar con la fase 3.
“Estamos hablando con varios países europeos y creo que también discutimos con el Reino Unido”, expresó Helen Yang, directora sénior de relaciones con inversionistas.
Este viernes 29 de mayo el mundo superó los seis millones de contagiados, de acuerdo a Worldometers, a causa de una pandemia que también deja 366.374 muertos. Aunque son conscientes de la emergencia, Yang matizó que “es una etapa muy preliminar para la discusión” sobre la vacuna.
La comunidad científica ha aclarado que lo más probable es que la vacuna esté lista para el próximo año. Estados Unidos es uno de los países en la carrera y precisamente su presidente, Donald Trump, es el único líder que mantiene lo contrario.
Entretanto, Sinovac sigue adelante con la construcción de una planta comercial en otra parte de la capital china con la meta de entregar unas 100 millones de dosis de su CoronaVac.
La empresa sugirió primero aplicarla a grupos de alto riesgo, los más vulnerables al coronavirus, como trabajadores sanitarios o adultos mayores. “Nuestra recomendación es que no se vacune a toda la población”, agregó Yang.
