Una científica estadounidense denunció que fue despedida por su negativa a manipular los datos sobre el nivel de la propagación de coronavirus para apoyar de esta manera la iniciativa de reabrir el estado de Florida, informó este martes Florida Today.
Rebekah Jones afirmó que había desarrollado dos aplicaciones en dos idiomas, así como dos tableros de monitoreo y seis mapas con el fin de crear un modo para seguir en tiempo real la situación del covid-19 en Florida. Sin embargo, el pasado 5 de mayo perdió su trabajo y posteriormente fue despedida de su puesto como gerente en los Sistemas de Información Geográfica del Departamento de Salud de Florida. Según señaló al medio CBS12, el motivo de su despido fue que se negó a «cambiar manualmente los datos para conseguir apoyo para el plan de reapertura» del estado, aunque no proporcionó más detalles al respecto.

Tras la publicación de la noticia en Florida Today, Helen Aguirre Ferré, portavoz del gobernador de Florida, Ron DeSantis, señaló en una declaración para Miami Herald que, aunque «Rebekah Jones ya no participa [en el proyecto], el equipo de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica sigue gestionando y actualizando el tablero, proporcionando información precisa e importante que es accesible públicamente».
Por su parte, el senador demócrata de Florida José Javier Rodríguez envió este martes una carta al gobernador DeSantis en la que exigía que el caso sea investigado. «Si no es verdad, es necesario que los ciudadanos estén seguros de que no lo es y así podamos continuar confiando en la información. Si estas denuncias son justificadas, entonces tenemos que hacer correcciones para restaurar la fe de la ciudadanía» en esta información, destacó a CBS4 News.
Hasta la fecha, el estado de Florida registró 47.471 infecciones con coronavirus y 2.096 muertes, de acuerdo con los datos de la Universidad Johns Hopkins.
