Nueva York registra un niño muerto y 73 internados por el síndrome de Kawasaki
Se incrementó la cantidad de menores que lo padece y que podría estar relacionado con el coronavirus.
El número de niños en Nueva York con una rara complicación de coronavirus aumentó a 73 informaron en las últimas horas. La enfermedad, denominada «síndrome inflamatorio multisistémico pediátrico», puede provocar inflamación del músculo cardíaco y «tiene características que se superponen con la enfermedad de Kawasaki y el síndrome de shock tóxico», según un comunicado de prensa difundido por el Departamento de Salud del estado de Nueva York.
Las autoridades sanitarias en el condado Westchester anunciaron este viernes 8 de mayo que un menor de 7 años falleció la semana pasada víctima de la misteriosa enfermedad ligada al coronavirus.
El lunes el Departamento de Salud e Higiene Mental había emitido una alerta sobre la afección que, en ese momento, había afectado solo a 15 niños en la ciudad. Los síntomas pueden incluir fiebre, erupción cutánea y enfermedad abdominal. Algunos niños debieron ser internados en terapia intensiva, y hasta ahora no se reportaron fallecidos.
«Algunos de los casos que estamos tratando actualmente fueron internados presentando síntomas como dolor abdominal, vómitos, diarrea y una baja fiebre. Otros se presentaron primero con una erupción cutánea, conjuntivitis o labios agrietados», señaló el doctor George Ofori, director de cuidaos intensivos pediátricos del Mount Sinai Kravis Children’s Hospital
También se reportaron otros casos de lo que ahora se llama síndrome inflamatorio multisistémico pediátrico en Europa. Algunos, de los menores afectados dieron positivo por el coronavirus, aunque la mayoría no contrajo el Covid-19.
La enfermedad de Kawasaki no se transmite de una persona a otra, y sus causas son desconocidas. Este síndrome se hizo conocido en 2009 tras la muerte de Jett, el hijo de 16 años de John Travolta, quien la había sufrido cuando era más pequeño. También tuvo Kawasaki en 2014 la hija del cantante Axel, que tenía entonces tres años y evolucionó bien.
Detectado a tiempo, el síndrome de Kawasaki tiene un pronóstico favorable. Se trata con inmunoglobulinas y aspirinas. Pero si no se detecta, puede derivar en complicaciones como aneurismas y arritmias.
