Este miércoles se aproxima a la Tierra un enorme y peligroso asteroide
Este cuerpo, que mide entre 1,8 y 4,1 kilómetros de diámetro, llegará mañana a su punto más próximo de nuestro planeta.
El esperado asteroide 1998 OR2, de unos dos kilómetros de diámetro, alcanzará su mayor aproximación a la Tierra este miércoles a las 3.56 hora de Costa Rica, en su trayectoria por el sistema solar interior. Las últimas imágenes muestran que tiene una forma redondeada y esférica.
Aunque el asteroide está en la lista de objetos potencialmente peligrosos, esta vez pasará a 0,042 unidades astronómicas (AU) de la Tierra, unos 6,3 millones de kilómetros de distancia, aproximadamente 16 veces mayor que la distancia de la Tierra a la Luna. No representa riesgo alguno de impacto pero los astrónomos están atentos al leve acercamiento.
1998 OR2 es un asteroide «Amor», con una órbita que contenga totalmente a la terrestre y que tenga un perihelio justo afuera de la órbita de la Tierra. El pase de esta semana es el segundo más cercano para el asteroide a la Tierra en el siglo XXI.
El asteroide pasará tres veces más cerca de nuestro planeta justo el 16 de abril de 2079, cuando lo hará a 0,012 UA o 1,8 millones de kilómetros de la Tierra, lo más cerca que pueda estar en la época actual, informa Universe Today.
Una llamativa imagen de la aproximación tomadas la semana pasada por el Observatorio de Arecibo le mostraba con una cara expuesta al brillo solar, dando la apariencia de llevar una mascarilla.
Algún día, 1998 OR2 será expulsado del sistema solar interno o podría golpear la Tierra o la Luna, en siglos o milenios a partir de ahora. Tal impacto solo causaría daños regionales limitados, similar al evento de impacto en Australia que cubrió la región del Pacífico con tectitas hace unos 790.000 años.
Cualquier persona con un telescopio pequeño y que sepa apuntarlo hacia el lugar y momento correcto podrá apreciar al asteroide 5276 como una aparente estrella moviéndose muy lentamente.
El asteroide 1998 OR2 es una roca espacial que se desplaza a una velocidad 31.320 km/h, es decir a 8,7 kilómetros por segundo.
De todos los acercamientos de grandes objetos cercanos a la Tierra que ocurren a menos de 5 distancias lunares, el del asteroide 1998 OR2 será el de mayor tamaño en aproximarse a nuestro planeta durante los próximos 200 años.
