¿Qué son los fagos? La solución a la resistencia bacteriana generada por antibióticos
La biotecnología uruguaya sigue dando muestras de innovación al desarrollar la startup Kinzbio, el primer medicamento contra infecciones resistentes en base a bacteriófago.
La startup uruguaya Kinzbio, fundada en 2021 por Gregorio Iraola y Josefina Puig, ha lanzado un innovador medicamento basado en bacteriófagos (virus que atacan específicamente a bacterias) para combatir infecciones resistentes a los antibióticos tradicionales. Este avance en la biotecnología ofrece una solución personalizada para tratar a pacientes con infecciones graves que no responden a tratamientos convencionales.
Los bacteriófagos, conocidos como «verdugos de bacterias», son virus naturales que infectan únicamente a las bacterias. Kinzbio ha desarrollado una plataforma tecnológica que permite personalizar la terapia seleccionando los bacteriófagos más efectivos para cada caso. El uso de estos fagos, específicamente un grupo llamado jumbo, ha demostrado ser altamente efectivo en casos críticos. En uno de sus primeros tratamientos, un paciente con una infección pulmonar grave fue tratado con éxito sin efectos secundarios notables.
La resistencia antimicrobiana es uno de los mayores problemas de salud a nivel global. Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), en 2019, las infecciones por bacterias resistentes causaron 1.27 millones de muertes directas y contribuyeron a 4.95 millones de muertes. Los bacteriófagos representan una alternativa clave frente a esta «pandemia silenciosa», ya que no generan toxicidad y permiten tratamientos prolongados sin efectos secundarios a largo plazo.
Kinzbio, con su enfoque innovador y su visión de expansión global, está liderando un cambio en la manera de enfrentar las infecciones bacterianas, ofreciendo una alternativa prometedora ante la creciente amenaza de la resistencia a los antibióticos.
