Estudiantes del TEC ganan segundo lugar en la mayor conferencia de informática de Latinoamérica
Un artículo elaborado por dos estudiantes del TEC del Centro Académico de Alajuela fue reconocido en la 50ª edición de la Conferencia Latinoamericana de Informática (CLEI 2024), celebrada en Bahía Blanca, Argentina.
El trabajo, que destaca la relevancia del desarrollo de habilidades en Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas (STEM) y aborda las desigualdades de género en estas áreas, se llevó el segundo lugar como Mejor Artículo entre más de 100 propuestas.
Los autores, María Fernanda Biarreta y Josué Castro, ambos estudiantes de Ingeniería en Computación, fundamentaron su propuesta en el proyecto “Desafiando la brecha de género en STEM: Caso de la UTN”.
Este programa busca capacitar a mujeres en el lenguaje de programación Python, con un enfoque en Ciencia de Datos, y fue desarrollado en colaboración con estudiantes y docentes de la Universidad Técnica Nacional (UTN), apoyados por las profesoras María Auxiliadora Mora Cross (TEC) y Kattia Rodríguez Brenes (UTN).
“El segundo lugar representa un reconocimiento al trabajo que hemos realizado durante el último año, además de motivarnos a colaborar en futuros proyectos educativos como una contribución para disminuir la brecha de género que actualmente existe en áreas de estudio como la nuestra, y compartir conocimientos útiles con otras personas para potenciar sus carreras profesionales”, comentó Biarreta.
El proyecto no solo se enfoca en la capacitación, sino que también ha generado nuevos cursos en otros países a través de la Red de Ciencia de Datos para la Conservación de la Biodiversidad Mesoamericana (Rebioma), incluyendo formaciones en Aprendizaje Automático aplicado a Datos de Biodiversidad y Programación en R.
Josué agregó que “El curso, únicamente para mujeres, se abrió con la intención de brindarles un plus al currículum, para que al buscar trabajo sobresalgan un poco más que el resto, con el fin de intentar reducir brechas de género”.
Ambos estudiantes agradecieron al Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC) por el apoyo económico recibido a través de la Vicerrectoría de Vida Estudiantil y Servicios Académicos (VIESA) y el Fondo de Desarrollo de la Unidad Operativa (FDU).
La CLEI 2024 se consolida como un espacio fundamental para el intercambio de ideas y experiencias en el ámbito de la informática, y este reconocimiento resalta la labor de jóvenes comprometidos con la equidad de género y la capacitación en STEM.
