Brasil Registra las Primeras Muertes por el Virus del Oropouche
En un reciente informe, el Ministerio de Salud de Brasil ha confirmado las primeras muertes en el mundo atribuidas al virus del Oropouche. Las víctimas, dos mujeres jóvenes del estado de Bahía en el noreste de Brasil, fallecieron a causa de esta enfermedad viral. Ambas, menores de 30 años y sin antecedentes de enfermedades preexistentes, presentaron síntomas que se asemejaban a un cuadro severo de dengue.
Este anuncio marca la primera vez que se reportan muertes por Oropouche, una enfermedad que se identificó por primera vez en Brasil en 1960 a partir de un perezoso infectado. Desde entonces, los casos de Oropouche han sido registrados predominantemente en la región amazónica y en otras áreas de América Latina. No obstante, hasta ahora no se había documentado ningún deceso relacionado con esta fiebre en la literatura científica global.
En la actualidad, las autoridades sanitarias de Brasil están investigando un posible caso de Oropouche en el estado de Santa Catarina, mientras han descartado un reporte de muerte en Maranhao. La fiebre de Oropouche se transmite principalmente a través de jejenes y mosquitos, y sus síntomas son similares a los del dengue, aunque generalmente menos graves.
Hasta la fecha, Brasil ha registrado aproximadamente 7.236 casos de fiebre de Oropouche en 2024, con la mayoría concentrados en la región amazónica. Las autoridades también están examinando seis posibles casos de transmisión vertical de la enfermedad de madre a hijo, que han resultado en dos muertes fetales, un aborto espontáneo y tres casos con anomalías congénitas, incluyendo microcefalia.
El brote de Oropouche se da en un contexto de grave crisis de dengue en Brasil. Este año, el país enfrenta el peor brote de dengue de su historia, con al menos 4.824 muertes confirmadas y 6,4 millones de casos positivos desde enero de 2024.
Según la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), la transmisión del virus del Oropouche es común en comunidades tanto rurales como urbanas en varios países de América Latina, incluyendo Brasil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guayana Francesa, Panamá, Perú y Trinidad y Tobago.
