Estudiante de la UCR, de 22 años, se sitúa entre los mejores del mundo en prueba médica internacional
Con tan solo 22 años, Akira Osawa Pivovarov, originario de San Ramón de Alajuela y estudiante de Medicina en la Universidad de Costa Rica (UCR), alcanzó un hito notable al obtener la mejor calificación en Costa Rica y posicionarse entre los mejores del mundo en el International Foundations of Medicine (IFOM), una de las pruebas de comprobación médica más rigurosas a nivel global.
El IFOM, administrado por el National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), evalúa el conocimiento médico y científico de los estudiantes en Asia, América, Oceanía y Europa.
Akira, de raíces rusas y japonesas, obtuvo una impresionante nota de 84, situándolo no solo como el mejor en Costa Rica, sino también entre el 4 % de los mejores a nivel mundial.
De acuerdo con los informes del NBME, Akira hoy es parte de los 161 estudiantes más ejemplares a nivel mundial.
Al ser consultado sobre su motivación en la medicina, Akira afirmó: “lo que más me satisface es llegar al paciente y aplicar todo lo que sé de manera perfecta, coherente y empática para poder beneficiar a la persona lo más posible”.
“Estoy muy contento con este logro. Es importante tener buenas bases para muchos de los conceptos que entran en el examen y, desde el segundo año, en la UCR nos dan las ciencias básicas de medicina que ayudan mucho a reforzar esas bases. Más adelante en la carrera, con los cursos clínicos, siento que uno va reforzando todavía más la habilidad clínica. Finalmente, la Escuela de Medicina nos ofrece un programa de educación virtual que considero como una de las principales herramientas que nos ofrece la UCR. Empecé a prepararme un año antes, pero creo que uno se prepara desde que se ingresa a la carrera”, agregó Akira.
La UCR celebró este logro no solo como un triunfo individual, sino como una demostración del alto nivel educativo que ofrece.
En total, 82 jóvenes de la UCR tomaron la prueba y obtuvieron un promedio de 60. Este promedio es muy superior a la media internacional que, para este año, se ubicó en 55 y que contempla el resultado de la evaluación de 4 026 estudiantes provenientes de los cuatro continentes.
Con ese mismo promedio de 60, los estudiantes de la UCR rebasaron enormemente el promedio nacional que, para este año, fue de 44. Este promedio nacional (44) contabiliza el desempeño global de los 382 postulantes de universidades privadas y públicas que hicieron la comprobación, según reportó la NBME.
Calidad UCR
Para este 2024, y por octava vez, la UCR sigue manteniendo su liderazgo con la mayor cantidad de aspirantes que aprueban el IFOM.
En esta ocasión fue de un 91,46 %, parte de los porcentajes más altos alcanzados en el país. Asimismo, de las 16 mejores notas de Costa Rica, 14 son de la UCR, la mayor cifra a nivel nacional.
De esos 16 jóvenes, nueve estudiantes costarricenses fueron reconocidos por la NBME debido a su elevada excelencia académica y ocho correspondían a la UCR. Para ser parte de ese selecto grupo, las y los jóvenes debían tener una calificación igual o superior a 74.
De esta manera, las y los estudiantes de la UCR demuestran, una vez más, el liderazgo de la educación superior pública. Asimismo, dejan en alto el nombre de Costa Rica a nivel mundial debido a la preparación que se brinda en el país.
El examen
El IFOM contempla 160 preguntas que deben ser contestadas en un máximo de cuatro horas y se califican tres perfiles.
El primer perfil se relaciona con la tarea médica que contempla el mantenimiento de la salud, prevención y vigilancia; aplicación de conceptos de las ciencias fundamentales; así como diagnóstico, farmacoterapia, intervención y manejo.
El segundo fue el perfil de los nueve sistemas del cuerpo humano: el inmunológico, el nervioso, el cardiovascular, el respiratorio, el gastrointestinal, el reproductivo, el renal, el osteomuscular, el endocrino; además de los procesos y trastornos multisistémicos.
Finalmente, se examinó el perfil disciplinar. Aquí se encuentran cinco áreas: Medicina General, Pediatría, Psiquiatría, Cirugía, así como Obstetricia y Ginecología.
El objetivo de la prueba es evaluar el conocimiento básico de medicina de las personas aspirantes y, en el caso específico de Costa Rica, examinar a todas aquellas que desean llevar a cabo su internado clínico en los hospitales de la Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS).
Con este examen se le garantiza a la población costarricense que los futuros internos, quienes en poco tiempo estarán rotando en los hospitales públicos de la CCSS, tienen el conocimiento científico necesario, las habilidades y recursos para apoyar en la atención mientras, al mismo tiempo, consolidan su aprendizaje básico y clínico. Todo lo anterior, siempre bajo la supervisión docente.
