El sur de Etiopía enfrenta una tragedia devastadora tras un deslizamiento de tierra ocurrido el lunes, que ha dejado un saldo provisional de 146 víctimas fatales. Las autoridades locales informaron el martes que el número de fallecidos podría seguir aumentando, ya que las labores de búsqueda y rescate continúan en la región afectada.
Habtamu Fetena, portavoz de la zona de Gofa, detalló que hasta ahora se han recuperado 146 cuerpos, de los cuales 96 corresponden a hombres y 50 a mujeres. Las operaciones de búsqueda se mantienen en curso con gran intensidad, en un esfuerzo por localizar a posibles sobrevivientes y víctimas adicionales.
El deslizamiento de tierra tuvo lugar en el distrito de Geze-Gofa, una área rural y montañosa situada a más de 450 kilómetros de Adís Abeba, la capital etíope. La ubicación remota y el terreno accidentado han dificultado significativamente las labores de rescate y asistencia.
Este deslizamiento ocurre en un contexto de emergencia más amplio, ya que la región sur de Etiopía ha sido golpeada por severas inundaciones durante los meses de abril y mayo, en plena temporada de lluvias. Estas inundaciones ya habían causado estragos en la zona, complicando aún más la situación tras el desastre reciente.
