El atacante, identificado como Thomas Matthew Crooks, de 20 años, abrió fuego con un rifle AR mientras Trump comenzaba un discurso en un mitin en Butler, Pensilvania. Crooks disparó ocho veces antes de ser neutralizado por un francotirador del Servicio Secreto, apenas 26 segundos después de su primer tiro.

El congresista republicano Michael Turner también se sumó a las demandas de renuncia, sugiriendo que si Cheatle no dimitía, el presidente Biden debería considerarla para despido por el bien de la seguridad nacional.
Jamie Raskin, representante demócrata en el comité, también se mostró crítico. Jackson, ahora congresista de extrema derecha, visitó a Trump en New Jersey y ha estado proporcionando atención médica desde el incidente.
