Un Viaje al Festival que se Tornó en Tragedia
Hace más de una década, el joven Ollie Towler-Jones, de tan solo 18 años, partió desde su hogar en Norwich hacia el tan esperado Festival Latitude, un evento anual que compartía con su madre, Jo Towler. Esta ocasión festiva, que ambos anticipaban con entusiasmo, se convirtió en un escenario de pesadilla.
Un Malestar Inesperado
Durante el festival, Ollie comenzó a sentirse mal. Pensó que era solo una resaca después de una noche de diversión y decidió descansar y tomar algunos analgésicos. Sin embargo, al despertar el sábado por la mañana, se sentía aún peor. Su condición se agravó rápidamente: tuvo dificultades para respirar y sus piernas se entumecieron y adquirieron un tono morado.
Emergencia Médica
Alarmados, los presentes lo trasladaron de urgencia al Hospital Universitario de Norfolk y Norwich. Allí, los médicos decidieron inducirlo a un coma a las 6:30 p.m., intentando salvar su vida. Desafortunadamente, Ollie no logró recuperarse y falleció a las 8:16 p.m. del 19 de julio de 2014, apenas ocho horas después, debido a la falla total de sus órganos.
El Descubrimiento de la Meningitis
Tras realizarle dos autopsias, su familia descubrió que Ollie había muerto a causa de una cepa de meningitis conocida como MenW. «El día que murió fue uno de los más traumáticos de mi vida. Perder a un hijo es la peor pesadilla de cualquier padre y la vida nunca vuelve a ser la misma», expresó su madre Jo Towler en una entrevista con Eastern Daily Press.
El Legado de Ollie
Ollie era el hijo único de Jo Towler y Marc Jones. A pesar del inmenso dolor, Jo continuó asistiendo al Festival Latitude en los años siguientes en honor a la memoria de su hijo. En cada visita, el festival se convierte en un recordatorio doloroso de Ollie, pero también en una manera de mantener vivo su amor por la música en vivo.
En declaraciones al Eastern Daily Press, Jo explicó que sigue asistiendo al festival porque era una pasión que compartía con Ollie. «Es muy estresante. Siempre creo que lo he visto entre la multitud», comentó Jo. Desde la muerte de Ollie, Jo ha dedicado su vida a crear conciencia sobre la meningitis, instando a todos a vacunarse contra la bacteria MenACWY.
Un Mensaje a los Padres
«Han pasado 10 años y hasta el día de hoy, la gente todavía parece pensar que murió de una sobredosis, lo que no podría estar más lejos de la verdad y es muy frustrante», dijo Jo. En declaraciones a la organización benéfica Meningitis Now, Jo subrayó: «El padre de Ollie y yo seguimos teniendo dificultades cada día y estoy segura de que habrá muchos más días de lucha por venir. Mi mensaje a los padres es que se aseguren de vacunar a sus hijos».
