Sin embargo, la vida de Marcus cambió drásticamente hace una década cuando comenzó a notar un crecimiento desproporcionado en sus extremidades y otras partes del cuerpo.
Diagnóstico Inusual: La Enfermedad de Madelung
Hace diez años, el cuerpo de José Marcus comenzó a adoptar una forma inusual con el crecimiento de sus extremidades y la aparición de masas bajo la piel en brazos, pecho, cuello, espalda y manos. Tras varias consultas médicas, le diagnosticaron la rara enfermedad de Madelung. Esta condición, según la Universidad de Stanford, se caracteriza por la acumulación de tejido adiposo de manera simétrica en diversas áreas del cuerpo.
De acuerdo con la revista ‘Reumatología Clínica’, los síntomas de esta enfermedad incluyen tumores de crecimiento lento en la zona dorso cubital de las muñecas, acompañado de dolor local y, en algunos casos, disminución de la movilidad. Aunque la causa exacta es desconocida, se cree que una enzima defectuosa que debería disolver la grasa en el torrente sanguíneo, en su lugar, la deposita en el cuerpo formando estos bultos.
La Aparición de los Síntomas
En una entrevista con ‘Discovery Channel’, José Marcus compartió su historia. Antes de que la enfermedad comenzara a manifestarse, trabajaba en una fábrica de reciclaje de plásticos que eventualmente cerró. Para sobrevivir y enfrentar su condición, abrió un bar de cachaza, donde conoció a Jovelina. Juntos han enfrentado los desafíos que la vida les ha presentado, convirtiéndose en un apoyo mutuo.
Durante ese tiempo, Marcus notó un pequeño bulto que comenzó a crecer y a extenderse a otras partes de su cuerpo. Este cambio físico significativo ocurrió en un período de diez años, dejándolo irreconocible. «Suele doler mucho», comentó Marcus sobre su transformación.
Intervención Quirúrgica
Este año, Marcus se sometió a una cirugía compleja en el Hospital Universitario Alberto Antunes, ubicado a tres horas de Arapiraca. Antes de la operación, se realizaron varios exámenes para asegurarse de que su corazón pudiera soportar el procedimiento.
El equipo de cirujanos, liderado por la especialista Emmanuella A de Oliveira, se encargó de la operación. «Se detalla la multiplicación de estas células grasas en estos lugares,» explicó la doctora Oliveira. La cirugía, que duró más de ocho horas, implicó múltiples incisiones y la remoción de una masa de 1,8 kilogramos.
Vida Después de la Cirugía
Aunque la intervención fue larga y complicada, los médicos lograron remover gran parte de los bultos y tratar la piel afectada. A pesar de que aún quedan algunas áreas por tratar, Marcus ha experimentado una notable mejoría en su calidad de vida.
