En un acto de campaña marcado por la tragedia, el candidato republicano a la presidencia de Estados Unidos, Donald Trump, se comprometió a brindar apoyo económico a la familia de Corey Comperatore, un bombero que perdió la vida en un tiroteo durante un mitin en Pensilvania el sábado 13 de julio.
Durante su primer discurso como candidato presidencial, Trump informó que se han recaudado más de 6.3 millones de dólares para la familia de Comperatore. En un gesto simbólico, mostró al público un cheque de un millón de dólares donado por un amigo personal, destinado a ayudar a las víctimas del ataque.
«En los últimos días, hemos recaudado 6 millones 300 mil dólares para la familia de Corey Comperatore, incluyendo un cheque de un millón de dólares de un amigo mío», anunció Trump antes de pedir un minuto de silencio en memoria de los fallecidos.
Antes de hablar sobre la ayuda económica, Trump rindió homenaje a Comperatore mostrando su chaqueta y casco de bombero. «Quiero agradecer al departamento de bomberos y a su familia por enviarnos su casco y su chaqueta. Va a ser algo especial cuando lo reciban de vuelta», expresó el candidato.
Corey Comperatore, un bombero y padre de familia, falleció en el ataque mientras protegía a sus seres queridos. Asistió al evento republicano junto a su esposa e hijas y perdió la vida al intentar salvarlas. Su muerte fue confirmada por el gobernador de Pensilvania, Josh Shapiro, quien destacó que Comperatore «murió como un héroe» al proteger a su familia de los disparos.
La hermana de la víctima, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, compartió su dolor en redes sociales: «El odio hacia un hombre se llevó la vida de la persona que más hemos amado. Fue un héroe que cubrió a sus hijas. Mi pequeño hermano acababa de cumplir 50 años y tenía mucha vida por delante».
Allyson, una de las hijas de Comperatore, también expresó su tristeza y gratitud hacia su padre: «Los medios no le dirán que murió como un superhéroe en la vida real. No les van a decir lo rápido que nos tiró al suelo a mi mamá y a mí. Amaba a su familia. Él realmente nos amaba lo suficiente como para recibir una bala real por nosotros».
Trump también se comunicó telefónicamente con la familia de James Copenhaver, otra víctima del tiroteo en Pensilvania. Durante una llamada realizada el jueves 18 de julio, Trump habló sobre la tragedia y expresó su intención de volver a comunicarse con Copenhaver, quien se encontraba durmiendo en el momento de la llamada. Joseph Feldman, vocero de la familia y abogado, confirmó que Trump planea hablar directamente con Copenhaver en el futuro.
Copenhaver, un sobreviviente del ataque, expresó su deseo de recuperarse por completo y retomar su vida: «Espero volver a subirme a mi Harley Davidson algún día y dar un paseo con mi mejor amigo Randy, que asistió al mitin conmigo ese día y fue la primera persona que me cuidó después de recibir un disparo».
Este trágico incidente ha unido a la comunidad en torno a las víctimas y sus familias, mientras Trump y sus seguidores buscan rendir homenaje a los héroes que sacrificaron tanto en un día de campaña que se convirtió en una dolorosa pesadilla.
