Recientemente, el desarrollo del programa nuclear iraní ha captado la atención de Estados Unidos, en medio de informes que sugieren un posible avance hacia la producción de material fisible para armas nucleares. Esta situación ha sido destacada por altos funcionarios de la administración Biden en un foro de seguridad celebrado en Colorado.
Según Antony Blinken, Secretario de Estado de EE. UU., y Jake Sullivan, asesor de seguridad nacional, Irán ha intensificado sus esfuerzos en el desarrollo de un aspecto crucial para una posible bomba nuclear desde abril. Este mes marcó el momento en que Israel, junto con sus aliados, repelió una serie de ataques aéreos provenientes de Irán, lanzados contra el país hebreo.
Sullivan, hablando en el Foro de Seguridad de Aspen, señaló que, aunque Estados Unidos está observando de cerca la situación, no ha visto indicios claros de que Irán haya tomado una decisión definitiva para desarrollar una bomba nuclear en este momento. “Si Irán opta por seguir ese camino, enfrentará serias consecuencias con Estados Unidos”, advirtió Sullivan.
La reanudación de los avances nucleares iraníes se produjo después de que la administración Trump se retirara del acuerdo nuclear de 2015, que había ofrecido a Irán un alivio de las sanciones a cambio de una supervisión más rigurosa de su programa. Desde entonces, los expertos han estado atentos a cualquier señal de que Irán podría estar más cerca de obtener material fisible necesario para una bomba nuclear.
A pesar de que Irán sostiene que su programa nuclear tiene fines pacíficos, muchos en la comunidad internacional, incluidos Estados Unidos y sus aliados, siguen escépticos. La percepción es que el líder supremo iraní, Alí Khamenei, ha evitado dar luz verde definitiva para el desarrollo de un arma nuclear.
Un ataque significativo el 13 de abril, cuando Irán lanzó misiles y aviones no tripulados contra Israel, generó preocupación sobre la posible escalada en el interés de Irán por avanzar hacia la producción de armas nucleares. Israel, junto con Estados Unidos y otros aliados, reportó haber interceptado la mayoría de los misiles y drones lanzados por Irán durante ese intercambio.
En una declaración reciente, Blinken destacó que Irán ha estado progresando en la producción de material fisible, un componente esencial para cualquier arma nuclear. Criticó la decisión de la administración Trump de abandonar el acuerdo nuclear, indicando que, de no haber sido por esa decisión, Irán estaría ahora a más de un año de poder producir material fisible para un arma.
“Actualmente, están probablemente a solo semanas de lograrlo”, afirmó Blinken, señalando que aunque Irán aún no ha fabricado un arma nuclear, el material fisible y un artefacto explosivo podrían permitirles desarrollar una bomba en el futuro cercano.
Estados Unidos mantiene una vigilancia estrecha sobre cualquier indicio de progreso en la producción de armas nucleares por parte de Irán y está trabajando en el ámbito diplomático para controlar los esfuerzos iraníes. Sullivan añadió que ha habido un aumento en los comentarios públicos de funcionarios iraníes sobre la posibilidad de desarrollar armas nucleares desde los ataques y contraataques de abril, lo que ha captado la atención de Washington.
“La situación es preocupante y estamos atentos a cualquier nuevo desarrollo”, concluyó Sullivan.
