La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) emitió una severa advertencia el jueves sobre la amenaza representada por el mpox, conocido anteriormente como la ‘viruela del mono’, debido a un brote epidémico de una nueva y más letal cepa en la República Democrática del Congo.
Según los informes recibidos por la OMS, se han documentado casos en 26 países durante el último mes, exacerbando la preocupación global.
El director general de la OMS, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expresó en una conferencia de prensa que el mpox sigue siendo una seria amenaza para la salud mundial.
Sudáfrica ha registrado recientemente 20 casos, incluidos tres fatales, marcando los primeros casos en el país desde 2022. Lo más preocupante es que ninguno de los pacientes había viajado al extranjero, indicando una transmisión comunitaria activa.
La situación en la República Democrática del Congo es particularmente alarmante, con una nueva cepa del virus que se ha propagado desde septiembre y muestra pocas señales de desaceleración. Hasta ahora, se han reportado 11,000 casos, de los cuales 445 han resultado en muertes, afectando severamente a los niños.
En mayo de 2022, los brotes de mpox comenzaron a extenderse fuera de la región endémica en África central y occidental, alertando a la comunidad internacional. La OMS declaró la emergencia de salud pública de alcance internacional en julio de ese año, levantándola en mayo de 2023, aunque continúa recomendando una vigilancia rigurosa.
La nueva cepa identificada como clado Ib, aún más letal, se transmite principalmente por contacto sexual. La enfermedad se caracteriza por erupciones cutáneas que aparecen en genitales o boca, acompañadas de fiebre, dolor de garganta y ganglios linfáticos inflamados.
El mpox se propaga a través del contacto estrecho con individuos infectados o animales, así como por objetos contaminados como ropa o ropa de cama utilizada por pacientes. La comunidad internacional está en alerta máxima ante esta grave crisis sanitaria.
