El huracán Beryl ha ganado rápidamente fuerza, escalando hasta convertirse en un ciclón de categoría 4 mientras avanza sobre el Caribe, generando máxima alerta en varios países de la región. Las proyecciones indican que podría impactar a México en los próximos días, marcando así el segundo ciclón significativo de la temporada en el Océano Atlántico.
Alex y Emma Steinke, recién casados el 15 de junio, decidieron pasar su luna de miel en Granada, un destino que prometía excursiones y días de playa. Sin embargo, fueron recibidos por el embate del huracán Beryl, que tocó tierra en el Caribe como una tormenta de categoría 4 el 1 de julio, con vientos de hasta 150 mph según The Weather Channel.
En una entrevista con PEOPLE, Emma compartió su experiencia única al enfrentar un fenómeno meteorológico de esta magnitud, especialmente siendo ambos originarios del Medio Oeste de Estados Unidos, donde tales eventos son raros. «Fue un poco surrealista», confesó Emma. «Acabábamos de llegar al paraíso, así que fue mucho lo que asimilar, especialmente porque no estamos acostumbrados a esto en casa. Alex ha vivido huracanes antes, pero para mí fue una experiencia totalmente nueva».
Llegaron a Granada el sábado 29 de junio después de un vuelo extenso desde Chicago, solo para encontrarse con que la tormenta había progresado rápidamente de tormenta tropical a huracán antes de su llegada. «Cuando comenzamos nuestro viaje, era solo una tormenta tropical, pero para cuando aterrizamos, ya era una alerta de huracán», relató Emma.
Ante las instrucciones del complejo turístico de mantenerse en el interior, Emma y Alex han seguido las recomendaciones al pie de la letra. «Hemos mantenido nuestros teléfonos cargados y hemos tratado de conservar agua y comida», explicó Emma. Aunque han experimentado algo de filtración de agua en su habitación debido a la intensa lluvia, están optimistas sobre la posibilidad de disfrutar el resto de su estancia en la isla.
Emma expresó su esperanza de que el clima no afecte su vuelo de regreso programado para el 6 de julio, aunque son conscientes de las posibles complicaciones. «Es una pena, pero esperamos que todos estén seguros, especialmente los residentes locales y el personal del resort que ha trabajado tan duro para nosotros», añadió.
A pesar de los desafíos presentados por el huracán Beryl, la pareja mantiene un espíritu optimista y está determinada a aprovechar al máximo su tiempo en Granada, siempre priorizando la seguridad y el bienestar de todos los involucrado
