A los 19 años, Mia comenzó a experimentar síntomas alarmantes como fatiga, pérdida de peso y caída del cabello. Los médicos inicialmente la diagnosticaron con alopecia, anemia e infección del tracto urinario (ITU). Sin embargo, su salud continuó deteriorándose, y en junio de 2022, una ecografía finalmente reveló que tenía cáncer de ovario en etapa uno.
Ante el diagnóstico, Mia se sometió a una cirugía de emergencia para extirpar el tumor, que había alcanzado el tamaño de un melón dulce y contenía cabello y dientes. A pesar de la intervención, el cáncer regresó seis meses después. No obstante, Mia completó con éxito un tratamiento de quimioterapia y recibió el alta médica en agosto de 2023.
Originaria de Liverpool, Mia compartió su historia para resaltar la importancia de cuestionar a los profesionales médicos y seguir buscando respuestas cuando se tiene una preocupación de salud.
«Me extirparon el apéndice en diciembre de 2021 y al mes siguiente comencé a sentir dolor. Me despertaba con una presión intensa y urgencia de ir al baño, pero el dolor desaparecía tan pronto como lo hacía,» explicó Mia a The Sun.
Durante seis meses, Mia visitó urgencias dos veces y tuvo alrededor de cinco consultas con su médico de cabecera, recibiendo múltiples diagnósticos erróneos. «En urgencias me dieron antibióticos para una infección urinaria, pero yo sabía que no era eso,» recordó Mia.
En junio de 2022, regresó a urgencias donde pruebas adicionales confirmaron que tenía cáncer de ovario. «El personal médico me dijo que mi tumor era del tamaño de un melón y que necesitaría una cirugía de emergencia. Aunque lo detectaron a tiempo, era un tumor grande y en crecimiento,» relató Mia.
La cirugía fue exitosa, aunque tuvieron que extirparle el ovario derecho, la trompa de Falopio, parte del abdomen y algunos ganglios linfáticos. «Me dijeron que el tumor tenía dientes y pelo, lo cual es aparentemente normal en un tumor tan grande,» comentó Mia.
En febrero de 2023, el cáncer volvió, y Mia se sometió a tres meses de quimioterapia. En agosto de 2023, recibió el alta médica, aunque debe realizarse exámenes periódicos para asegurar que el cáncer no regrese.
Mia subraya la importancia de ser persistente en la búsqueda de atención médica adecuada: «Siempre digo a las personas que pregunten a los médicos si sienten que algo anda mal. Podría haber muerto si no hubiera seguido yendo a urgencias. Mi tumor habría seguido creciendo y podría haber sido fatal,» concluyó Mia, quien ahora usa su experiencia para instar a otros a no ignorar sus síntomas y buscar siempre una segunda opinión.
