Beryl se fortalece a su paso por el Caribe y es el huracán de categoría 5 más precoz de los registros
El huracán había perdido fuerza durante su trayectoria, pero volvió a fortalecerse el lunes y alcanzó la categoría 5, la máxima en la escala de Saffir-Simpson.
Beryl, el huracán más temprano de categoría 5 en el Atlántico, amenaza el Caribe
El huracán Beryl, catalogado como categoría 5 y el más temprano de su tipo en la temporada de ciclones del Atlántico, avanza por el Caribe y representa una amenaza significativa para la República Dominicana y Jamaica, donde las autoridades han emitido alertas.
El Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC) de Estados Unidos ha descrito el ciclón como «potencialmente catastrófico», con vientos sostenidos de 270 kilómetros por hora. «Este es el huracán de categoría 5 más temprano registrado en el Atlántico», señaló el NHC.
Aunque Beryl perdió fuerza durante su recorrido, se intensificó nuevamente el lunes, alcanzando la categoría 5 mientras golpeaba la isla de Carriacou en Granada. «Carriacou fue devastada en media hora», afirmó el primer ministro de Granada, Dickon Mitchell, en una conferencia de prensa. Afortunadamente, no se han reportado muertos ni heridos.
Las imágenes de la capital de Granada, St. George, muestran lluvias torrenciales y fuertes vientos, según AFP. San Vicente y las Granadinas también sufrieron «vientos catastróficos y marejadas ciclónicas potencialmente mortales», de acuerdo con el NHC.
El NHC ha proyectado que las marejadas afectarán las costas del sur de Puerto Rico y La Española, que incluye a República Dominicana y Haití. En su informe más reciente, la agencia estadounidense ubicó al huracán a 715 kilómetros de la Isla Beata en República Dominicana. El gobierno dominicano ha emitido alerta roja para las provincias de Barahona y Pedernales.
Los vientos huracanados de Beryl se extienden hasta 65 kilómetros desde su centro, mientras que los vendavales con fuerza de tormenta tropical alcanzan los 205 kilómetros. Jamaica también ha emitido una alerta de huracán en previsión de la llegada de la tormenta el miércoles, con el NHC pronosticando «vientos potencialmente mortales y marejadas ciclónicas».
El NHC ha instado a las Islas Caimán, así como a varias áreas de la península de Yucatán y el Golfo de México, a mantenerse alerta ante el avance de la tormenta.
Un huracán inusual
Beryl es el primer huracán de la temporada 2024 en el Atlántico, que se extiende desde principios de junio hasta finales de noviembre. Se espera que Beryl mantenga su fuerza mientras avanza por el Caribe durante la semana. Los expertos destacan que es inusual que un ciclón tan potente se forme tan temprano en la temporada. «Solo se han registrado cinco huracanes importantes (Categoría 3+) en el Atlántico antes de la primera semana de julio», señaló en X el experto Michael Lowry.
El lunes por la tarde, las autoridades de Barbados informaron que la isla fue afectada por fuertes vientos y lluvias torrenciales, pero no hubo reportes de heridos. Una reunión del bloque regional caribeño Caricom en Granada fue pospuesta debido al huracán.
La Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica (NOAA) de Estados Unidos había pronosticado una temporada de huracanes activa, con la posibilidad de entre cuatro y siete huracanes de categoría 3 o más. Este aumento de tormentas se atribuye a las temperaturas cálidas del océano Atlántico y a las condiciones relacionadas con el fenómeno climático de La Niña en el Pacífico.
En los últimos años, los fenómenos meteorológicos extremos, incluidos los huracanes, se han vuelto más frecuentes y devastadores debido al cambio climático.
