Un centenar de muertes en India por estampida durante celebración religiosa

Tragedia en celebración hindú en India: casi cien muertos y cientos de heridos en estampida
El martes, una celebración religiosa hindú en el norte de India terminó en tragedia, con casi cien personas fallecidas y centenares heridas tras una estampida, según informó un alto funcionario local.
El incidente ocurrió en la ciudad de Hathras, donde los fieles se habían reunido para escuchar a un gurú durante las festividades en honor a la deidad Shiva. Mientras la multitud comenzaba a dispersarse, una tormenta de arena desató el pánico, provocando el caos.
«Confirmamos 97 muertes hasta ahora y estamos enfocados en proporcionar asistencia y atención médica a los afectados», declaró Chaitra V., superintendente de la ciudad de Aligarh, en el estado de Uttar Pradesh, a la agencia AFP. Según explicó, la tormenta de polvo cegó a los asistentes, lo que llevó al tumulto y al trágico desenlace.
La mayoría de las víctimas mortales son mujeres, según indicó el jefe médico de Uttar Pradesh, Umesh Kumar Tripathi. Muchos de los heridos fueron trasladados a hospitales en decenas de ambulancias. Fuera de la morgue de Etah, mujeres y hombres lloraban mientras esperaban la confirmación de la muerte de sus familiares.
Shakuntala, una feligresa que solo dio su primer nombre, relató a la agencia de noticias Press Trust of India: «Cuando terminó el sermón, todos comenzaron a correr. La gente cayó en un zanjón junto a la carretera. Se caían unos sobre otros y murieron aplastados».
El primer ministro Narendra Modi expresó sus condolencias y anunció una compensación de 2.400 dólares para las familias de los fallecidos y 600 dólares para los heridos en el «trágico incidente». «Mi más sentido pésame para aquellos que han perdido a sus seres queridos (…). Deseo la pronta recuperación de todos los heridos», escribió Modi en la red social X.
Lamentablemente, los incidentes trágicos en grandes celebraciones religiosas son comunes en India, donde vastas multitudes de peregrinos se congregan en lugares sagrados. En 2016, una explosión causada por fuegos artificiales durante las celebraciones del año nuevo hindú en un templo del estado de Kerala resultó en la muerte de al menos 112 personas.
