La Lucha de Kelly Knipes Contra un Trastorno del Sueño que Conduce a Compras Nocturnas
Kelly Knipes, una mujer de 42 años de Basildon, Essex, en el Reino Unido, enfrenta una batalla diaria contra un raro trastorno del sueño que la lleva a realizar compras en línea mientras está dormida. Este problema ha resultado en la llegada constante de paquetes que no recuerda haber ordenado, dejándola frustrada y agotada.
En una entrevista con ‘SWNS Media Group’, Knipes compartió la angustia de su situación: “Es realmente perturbador y frustrante irse a la cama pensando: no sé a qué nos llevará la noche”. Su lucha comenzó en 2018 cuando fue diagnosticada con parasomnia, una afección que, según la facultad de medicina de la Universidad de Yale, involucra comportamientos anormales e indeseables que ocurren durante el sueño.
El Dr. Tyler Lyson, de la Universidad de Yale, explica: “Una persona con parasomnias puede parecer que está alerta, caminando o hablando, comiendo o realizando otras actividades similares, pero sin estar consciente porque el cerebro está sólo parcialmente despierto”.
Desde su diagnóstico, Kelly ha recibido una variedad de artículos inesperados, desde una cancha de baloncesto completa hasta latas de pintura, libros, y dulces de Haribo. Una vez, incluso reveló su información financiera a estafadores mientras dormía, resultando en la pérdida de 317 dólares de su cuenta bancaria. «Les di todos mis datos y cuando me desperté, habían sacado 317 dólares de mi cuenta bancaria. No habría respondido si estuviera despierta», dijo.
El incidente con los estafadores llevó al banco a bloquear varias transacciones fraudulentas, evitando mayores pérdidas. Sin embargo, Kelly ha tenido que cancelar sus tarjetas de crédito repetidamente para protegerse de futuros intentos de fraude.
Kelly, que trabaja en el negocio de eventos, lamenta que no pudo devolver la mayoría de los artículos comprados durante sus episodios de parasomnia. “No podía reembolsar ninguna compra de alimentos, como los Haribo. Me quedé con las latas de pintura y la casita de juegos porque cuando llegó y mis hijos la vieron, sentí que no podía devolverla”, comentó.
Este trastorno no solo ha afectado sus finanzas, sino que también ha puesto en riesgo su salud. Kelly ha sufrido una sobredosis de medicamentos para la diabetes, se ha golpeado con ventanas y puertas abiertas, y ha sido hospitalizada varias veces. Atribuye su condición a la apnea del sueño, un trastorno que interrumpe su respiración durante la noche.
Como madre de tres niños con discapacidades – uno con epilepsia, otro con sordera y el tercero con dificultades de aprendizaje – Kelly evita tomar pastillas para dormir, ya que necesita estar alerta por si alguno de sus hijos la necesita.
Para manejar su condición, Kelly usa un dispositivo de presión positiva en las vías respiratorias (CPAP) para mantenerlas abiertas durante la noche. Aunque este dispositivo ha sido de gran ayuda, también ha provocado que sus mandíbulas se bloqueen mientras duerme, y a menudo se lo quita inconscientemente, lo que interfiere con su tratamiento.
A pesar de estos desafíos, Kelly continúa enfrentando su trastorno del sueño con determinación, buscando maneras de controlar sus síntomas y mejorar su calidad de vida. Su historia destaca la seriedad de los trastornos del sueño y las complejidades de vivir con una condición tan debilitante.
