Una familia había pasado un año planificando minuciosamente sus vacaciones, pero dos días antes de embarcarse, recibió un correo electrónico devastador que les informaba de la cancelación de su viaje debido a un caso de robo de identidad.
Este fue el caso de Tiffany Banks, conocida en TikTok como @thathippiedoc, quien decidió contar su desafortunada experiencia en un video. «Tengo que reírme o me voy a sentar a llorar», comenzó diciendo Banks en su relato. En una serie de videos en la plataforma, narró la pesadilla que vivió con la empresa de cruceros Carnival.
El día anterior a su vuelo hacia Florida, donde abordarían el barco, Banks recibió un correo electrónico de Carnival informándole que su reserva había sido cancelada. Desesperada, llamó a la compañía para averiguar más detalles. El representante le explicó que alguien había cancelado su reserva de $12,000 para la habitación más grande del barco a través del servicio en línea. Banks, devastada, rompió en llanto junto con sus cuatro hijos. «Tenemos casi $15,000 reservados para estas vacaciones, incluidas excursiones. La habitación en sí costaba, creo, $12,000 o $13,000, y luego tenemos un monto invertido en excursiones y, de hecho, casi $2,000 para vuelos», explicó.
Durante la llamada, Banks insistió en que ella nunca canceló la reserva. Sin embargo, la respuesta que recibió fue que su habitación ya había sido reasignada y solo quedaban disponibles las dos habitaciones más baratas del crucero. Banks decidió rechazar estas opciones y se dirigió al puerto de salida del crucero con la esperanza de encontrar una solución de última hora, pero el barco zarpó sin su familia.
Días después, Carnival se comunicó nuevamente con Banks y le explicó lo sucedido: habían sido «víctimas de una forma de robo de identidad». Al parecer, Banks y su esposo habían compartido accidentalmente el número de referencia de su reserva en una publicación de Facebook sobre la cuenta regresiva para sus vacaciones.
La experiencia de Banks es un recordatorio aleccionador de los riesgos de compartir información personal en las redes sociales y la importancia de proteger los detalles de viaje para evitar situaciones similares.
