Astronauta de la NASA que lleva un año varado en el espacio se comunica por última vez con la Tierra desde la EEI
El astronauta latino Frank Rubio, quien ha batido un récord de permanencia en el espacio, brindó su última conferencia al público antes emprender su regreso al planeta.
Frank Rubio, el astronauta que acaba de batir el récord de la estadía más larga en el espacio en una misión de la NASA, se comunicó por última vez con el público en la Tierra el martes 19 de septiembre, en una transmisión en la cual respondió a diversas preguntas de la prensa acerca de su experiencia en la Estación Espacial Internacional (EEI), donde se ha visto obligado a permanecer más de un año debido a problemas con su nave.
La conferencia de Rubio desde la EEI inició a las 11.15 a. m. (hora peruana) y se pudo ver en directo desde el canal oficial de YouTube de la NASA (puede revisar aquí la conversación completa en inglés).
El enlace fue su última comunicación con el público estando en órbita, ya que su regreso a la Tierra está programado para el miércoles 27 de septiembre. Después de ello, comenta, tendrá que recuperarse físicamente entre 2 a 6 meses.
Más de un año en el espacio
Rubio, de padres salvadoreños, llegó a la EEI en septiembre de 2022 para una misión de 6 meses, que duraría hasta marzo de 2023. No obstante, una falla en el sistema de refrigeración del vehículo que lo transportó y lo traería de regreso (la nave rusa Soyuz MS-22) obligó que su retorno se postergara sin fecha definitiva.
Rubio regresará a la Tierra el próximo 27 de septiembre, cuando haya cumplido 371 días en la órbita terrestre baja, una cifra récord para un astronauta de la NASA. En su viaje, estará acompañado por los cosmonautas Sergey Prokopiev (comandante) y Dmitrij Petelin (ingeniero).
Antes de Rubio, el estadounidense que poseía el récord al mayor tiempo en el espacio lo ostentaba el astronauta de la NASA Mark Vande Hei, quien permaneció fuera del planeta 355 días.

En la llamada a la Tierra, Frank Rubio contestó a diversas preguntas formuladas por periodistas estadounidenses y latinos, quienes se mostraron interesados por cómo fue su prolongada estadía y de qué manera su experiencia podría ayudar en los futuros viajes tripulados a la Luna y Marte.
Para Rubio, si bien el cansancio físico fue realmente significativo, sostuvo que “el factor psicológico fue más agotador de lo que pensaba” y que mantenerse en contacto con otras personas le ayudó bastante.
«Tener un buen equipo a tu alrededor es una ayuda increíble. Igualmente, mantenerte ocupado, pero no demasiado, y encontrar un equilibrio entre el trabajo y la relajación».
