Mujer se contagió con peligrosa bacteria tras una visita a la playa y terminó en reanimación
Lo que debió ser un día de regocijo en familia, se convirtió en un desafío para una joven estudiante que contrajo una bacteria. Al parecer, el agua había sido contaminada por privados.
Caitlin Edwards se fue a pasar un día festivo con su madre, Jayne Etherington, en una zona costera de Reino Unido y el paseo terminó en una ida al hospital, cuando la joven descubrió que se había infectado con una delicada bacteria tras ingresar al mar.
En agosto de 2022, Edwards y Etherington visitaron el sendero costero de Amroth, uno de los destinos turísticos populares del suroeste del Reino Unido. Allí disfrutaron del mar y otras actividades en la playa, sin embargo, poco tiempo después comenzó a tener calambres estomacales y diarreas.
Esto desencadenó en ella un Síndrome urémico hemolítico (SUH), una afección en la cual se inflaman los vasos sanguíneos de los riñones, algo que puede tener desenlaces fatales en el organismo.
«Cuando me llamaron, ella estaba en reanimación. Había pasado de ser una joven de 22 años feliz, saludable y vibrante a parecer que iba a morir», comentó Jane.
Tras investigaciones a fondo del hecho se descubrió que el tramo de mar en el cual se había sumergido Caitlin y otras tres playas de la zona habían sido contaminadas por un privado, lo cual puso en riesgo su vida.
A pesar de esto, voceros aseguran que no se han presenciado ni reportado otros afectados.
En su proceso de tratamiento contra la bacteria, el cual tomó meses, la joven debió ser sometida a múltiples transfusiones de sangre y procesos de diálisis para poder recuperar su salud.
Tras un año de su encuentro cercano con la muerte, Caitlin pudo terminar sus estudios y comenzar a trabajar con menores.
Por su parte, Jayne pidió a las personas reportar si tuvieron eventos adversos ocasionados por el agua del mar después de agosto de 2022, ya que está decidida a que esto no le suceda a nadie más.
