Estados Unidos ayudará a Costa Rica a combatir el crimen organizado
El gobierno de Joe Biden anunció que entregará 24 millones de dólares en fondos de ayuda a Costa Rica, para reforzar las fuerzas policiales y el sistema judicial.
El gobierno de Estados Unidos anunció este martes 29 de agosto que entregará unos 24 millones de dólares en fondos de ayuda a Costa Rica, para reforzar las fuerzas policiales y el sistema judicial del país en su lucha contra el crimen organizado.
En un comunicado, la Casa Blanca detalló que el dinero irá destinado a diferentes proyectos, entre ellos uno para la mejora de las estaciones de Policía, la Guardia Costera y el Servicio de Vigilancia Aérea.
Los mandatarios discutieron sobre cómo profundizar la cooperación entre los dos países en temas de «seguridad para combatir el crimen organizado y el consiguiente aumento de la violencia y la corrupción», detalló la Casa Blanca.
Biden y Chaves también abordaron el tema de la migración en el continente, y los esfuerzos de EE.UU. por controlar la llegada de migrantes a su frontera a través de selva del Darién, que pasa por Costa Rica.
En declaraciones a la prensa después de la reunión, Chaves dijo que coincidió con Biden sobre sobre la importancia de «entender la naturaleza del fenómeno» migratorio y administrarlo mientras surgen soluciones a los problemas estructurales» que lo generan, como la pobreza y falta de oportunidades.
Costa Rica, con unos 5,1 millones de habitantes, se ha convertido en el principal destino de los nicaragüenses que huyen de su país y además es una vía de tránsito para quienes han atravesado la peligrosa selva del Darién entre Colombia y Panamá, y cuyo destino es Estados Unidos.
Esta fue la primera reunión bilateral entre Biden y Chaves, que asumió la presidencia en mayo de 2022.
