Bernardo Arévalo es el presidente electo de Guatemala
El candidato del partido Movimiento Semilla se convierte en el presidente de Guatemala 2024-2028.
El académico Bernardo Arévalo de León, elegido este domingo como el próximo presidente de Guatemala, será el primer mandatario con una mirada progresista que lidere el país centroamericano, alejado de su la naturaleza conservadora de sus antecesores en el cargo.
Sin tachas en su carrera política y con un carácter ampliamente conciliador, Arévalo de León llega a la Presidencia después de una sorpresiva primera vuelta electoral el pasado 25 de junio, cuando se coló en el segundo lugar mientras los sondeos lo ubicaban en séptimo u octavo puesto.
La Presidencia será un premio para Arévalo de León, actual diputado tras fungir como uno de los fundadores del Movimiento Semilla hace ya casi una década.
Desde la implantación de la democracia en Guatemala en 1986, todos sus presidentes han sido de carácter conservador, con una amplia inclinación a la derecha en el espectro político.
Considerado como progresista o de una izquierda moderada, el académico ha dicho que su principal lucha al tomar posesión será contra la corrupción, sin olvidar en un futuro temas principales como la lucha contra la desnutrición o la mejora de los servicios de salud.
“Yo no soy mi padre”, señaló Arévalo de León el miércoles en el cierre de su campaña. “Pero recorro el mismo camino que él construyó y lo vamos a recorrer juntos como pueblo. Tengo el mismo anhelo que él y los revolucionarios de 1944”, apuntó.
La llegada de Arévalo de León a la Presidencia, sin embargo, aún está por confirmarse de cara a la investidura del próximo 14 de enero, por un período de cuatro años.
Ello debido a que el Ministerio Público (MP), cuya cúpula está sancionada por Estados Unidos, emprendió desde el 12 de julio varios intentos por suspender al Movimiento Semilla debido a un supuesto caso de firmas falsas en el partido durante su creación en 2018.
