El hombre que aseguraba ser un vampiro fue declarado culpable del asesinato en julio de 2002, pero fue ejecutado 21 años después. ‘Lo siento por las personas y la familia a las que lastimé’, fueron sus últimas palabras.
Johnny Johnson, de 45 años y quien afirmaba ser un vampiro, fue condenado el 26 de julio de 2002 por ser el responsable del asesinato de una niña de 6, identificada como Casey Williamson. El cuerpo de la menor fue encontrado en un pozo, a menos de dos kilómetros de su casa, ubicada en la ciudad de Valley Park, en Missouri, Estados Unidos.
De acuerdo con las autoridades, la madre de la víctima había sido la mejor amiga de la hermana mayor del asesino e incluso le había ayudado a cuidarlo, así que era un conocido de la familia. La noche anterior al crimen, los padres de Casey hicieron un asado en su casa e invitaron a Johnson, a quien dejaron dormir en el sofá de la sala hasta el día siguiente.
Ante la desaparición de la niña, familiares y amigos comenzaron una búsqueda frenética para dar con su paradero y la encontraron muerta en un pozo, enterrada debajo de piedras y escombros. Ese mismo día, el hombre confesó su crimen.
El día del juicio, los abogados de la defensa de Johnson sostuvieron que su cliente había sido dado de alta de un centro psiquiátrico estatal hacía seis meses, pero que en ese momento no estaba tomando su medicación para la esquizofrenia, por lo que actuaba de manera extraña.
Por este motivo, los abogados solicitaron una apelación para eliminar la pena de muerte de Johnson, argumentando que su esquizofrenia le impedía comprender el vínculo entre su crimen y el castigo. Sin embargo, en junio de 2023, la Corte Suprema de Missouri la rechazó y el hombre fue ejecutado.
Acorde con los informes presentados por el Departamento Correccional, la última comida de Johnny Johnson consistía en una hamburguesa, papas fritas rizadas y un batido de fresa. Por medio de una carta hecha a mano, el hombre comunicó sus últimas palabras a la familia de la víctima. “Dios los bendiga. Lo siento por las personas y la familia a las que lastimé”, escribió horas antes de morir, el martes primero de agosto de 2023.
