Crisis en Estados Unidos. Enfrentamientos entre defensores ambientales y empresarios se han originado después de que el presidente Joe Biden tomara la decisión de dar luz verde a un controvertido plan extractivo.
El mandatario de Estados Unidos, Joe Biden, anunció la aprobación del proyecto Willow, un plan que ha desatado gran polémica porque busca iniciar la explotación de petróleo y gas en territorio de Alaska. De acuerdo a expertos y organizaciones medioambientales, podría significar un gran riesgo para el aire y agua de la zona.
La aprobación de este proyecto se dio este último lunes, cuando el Gobierno estadounidense le dio luz verde a la empresa ConocoPhillips, que podrá trabajar en tres áreas de perforación ubicadas en una zona conocida como Reserva Nacional de Petróleo, uno de los lugares más ricos en biodiversidad y de los menos explorados de Estados Unidos.
¿Cuáles serían los beneficios del proyecto Willow?
De acuerdo a la empresa extractiva ConocoPhillips, se planea producir hasta 180.000 barriles de petróleo por día, se crearán 250.000 puestos de trabajo en su fase de construcción y otros 300 empleos de manera permanente cuando entre en funcionamiento.
“El proyecto Willow es de vital importancia para la economía de Alaska, trabajos bien remunerados para nuestras familias y la futura prosperidad de nuestro estado”, indicó Dan Sullivan, senador republicano por Alaska.
¿Cuáles serían las consecuencias del proyecto Willow?
Abigail Dillen, presidenta de Earthjustice, criticó la decisión de Biden, quien llegó al poder prometiendo que no iba a permitir nuevas perforaciones en terrenos federales. “Llegamos demasiado tarde a la crisis climática para aprobar proyectos masivos de petróleo y gas que socavan directamente la nueva economía limpia que la administración Biden se comprometió a promover”, denunció.
Por su parte, la organización ambientalista Sierra Club advirtió que el proyecto generará una contaminación de carbono, que, al ser liberado en el aire, tendrá efectos devastadores en las personas, vida silvestre y clima, daños que se verán en las próximas décadas.
Como se recuerda, Joe Biden se comprometió en recortar las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero a la mitad para 2030 respecto a 2005, camino a la meta de alcanzar una economía de cero emisiones antes de 2050.
