Metformina: ¿Qué dicen los expertos sobre su uso para bajar de peso y retrasar el envejecimiento?
Este medicamento ayuda a controlar la cantidad de glucosa en la sangre. Sin embargo, su uso con otros fines sigue siendo controvertido.
Distintas publicaciones en el mundo están apuntando a los supuestos efectos que la metformina, un conocido medicamento para la diabetes, tendría sobre el control del peso.
Asimismo, estos planteamientos sostienen también que el fármaco, que ayuda a controlar la cantidad de glucosa –azúcar– en la sangre, podría contribuir a retrasar el envejecimiento.
Estas versiones, que se pueden encontrar en un estudio compartido por el Departamento de Endocrinología, Diabetes y Metabolismo de la Clínica Cleveland, en Ohio, Estados Unidos, u otro disponible en la Librería Nacional de Medicina del país norteamericano, entre otros sitios, indican que una persona que consume metformina podría perder entre dos y casi siete kilos en promedio, junto con imitar los beneficios del ayuno y el ejercicio al estimular un proceso clave de limpieza y renovación celular en el organismo y reactivar el metabolismo.
Sin embargo, esto sigue siendo controvertido para los especialistas. En Chile, la doctora Cecilia Vargas, diabetóloga de la Clínica Alemana y presidenta de la Sociedad Chilena de Diabetología (Sochidiab), sostiene que la Meformina “es un extraordinario medicamento para el control de la diabetes”, recalcando que se utiliza hace más de 60 años en el mundo, “por lo tanto uno conoce bien tanto los efectos como las reacciones adversas de este fármaco”.
“En ese sentido, respecto a efectos sobre el control del peso, no hay ningún estudio que haya demostrado que este fármaco tenga utilidad al respecto. Lo que sí se ha visto es que en aquellas personas que tienen diabetes tipo 2, que inician insulina, usar este medicamento permite que las personas no suban de peso relacionado con el uso de la insulinoterapia”, explicó la doctora.
“La metformina no es un fármaco que se utilice para bajar de peso, porque no forma parte de las características o los efectos que se hayan demostrado con su uso en el control de peso”, advirtió.
