Jóvenes inversores hacen perder a grandes fondos de Wall Street

Wall Street presentó en la última semana un escenario de un fenómeno sorprendente; y es que, en unas pocas sesiones, la acción de los comercios de videojuegos GameStop subió a un ritmo desconcertante, impulsada por un grupo de operadores en cruzada contra el “establishment”.
Los hechos
Las tiendas GameStop están lejos de ofrecer un modelo radiante de crecimiento en una era en la que las compras en línea, las descargas o los juegos remotos han superado las ventas físicas.
Precisamente por estas dificultades financieras, las acciones del grupo están entre las más atacadas en Wall Street por las ventas en corto. Esta práctica, común en grandes fondos de inversión, consiste en vender anticipadamente acciones apostando a una caída en sus precios con el fin de recomprarlas más barato en una fecha posterior, y obtener así una ganancia sustancial.
Sin embargo, un grupo de traders que operan en bolsa, ansiosos por las apuestas financieras arriesgadas, se propuso oponerse a grandes nombres de las finanzas que venden en corto, y comenzaron a comprar masivamente acciones de GameStop para inflar su precio.
Con unos tres millones de suscriptores, el foro WallStreetBets del sitio Reddit ha sido la herramienta principal para este movimiento sin precedentes. Tanto es así que el viernes pasado la acción de GameStop (GME en la Bolsa de Nueva York) ganó más de un 50%.
Ante esta repentina alza, los fondos que habían apostado a la baja de GME se vieron obligados a recomprar las acciones para limitar sus pérdidas, provocando un “short squeeze” (o “liquidación forzosa”), que incrementó aún más el precio de la acción.
GameStop subió un 18% el lunes, luego un 93% el martes y nada menos que un 135% el miércoles. Las acciones de GameStop no son las únicas en la mira de dicho grupo; las de Blackberry, AMC y Nokia Oyj también lo están.
