Doctora Olga Arguedas: “No podemos retrasar el regreso de los niños a la escuela”
La directora del Hospital Nacional de Niños asegura que el regreso a clases traerá muchas ventajas si se siguen los protocolos.
La doctora Olga Arguedas, directora del Hospital Nacional de Niños (HNN) asegura que el regreso presencial a las aulas tendría más beneficios que desventajas si los centros educativos cumplen a cabalidad con los protocolos para disminuir el riesgo de contagio de la Covid-19.
En entrevista con el periódico La Nación, la doctora brindó una serie de recomendaciones de cara al regreso presencial a lecciones el próximo 8 de febrero.
La doctora Arguedas, quien además de ser pediatra posee una subespecialidad en Inmunología, aseguró que el regreso a clases es necesario para los pequeños no solo por el tema académico.
“Con absoluto conocimiento de causa aseguramos que la escuela es fundamental para el desarrollo de los chiquitos. No solo para el conocimiento, sino para el fortalecimiento de aspectos emocionales, nutricionales, de actividad física. Lamentablemente, en esta época de pandemia, hemos visto alteraciones muy importantes en la salud mental de los niños. Creemos que deben regresar a la escuela, evidentemente con todos los protocolos del caso”, indicó la directora del HNN.
“La escuela usualmente es un sitio más seguro que la casa para aquellos papás que ya deben incorporarse a labores presenciales. No es una buena alternativa dejarlos solos en la casa, con niños cuidando otros niños o con un cuidador que no es confiable”, agregó.
La doctora, comentó que en el caso de que los pequeños presenten una enfermedad de fondo, es importante que: “Le consulten al médico a cargo del cuidado de su niño si tiene condiciones o no para volver a clases presenciales. Cuando hablamos de enfermedades de fondo, en Pediatría no se ha logrado determinar con certeza que todas sean factores predisponentes para una evolución más grave de la Covid. Gracias a Dios, los niños se enferman de una manera más benigna que los adultos”.
“Pero hay algunos que tienen trastornos en su sistema de defensas, con problemas en el corazón, los niños con parálisis infantil o quienes tienen enfermedades respiratorias crónicas: esos son otra categoría de riesgo. Pero hay que individualizar casos. Mi recomendación con los niños así es que los padres le pregunten siempre al médico tratante”, agregó Arguedas.
La directora del centro médico infantil, aseguró que la enseñanza bimodal es una medida necesaria.
“El país tiene muchas fortalezas para poder seguir adelante con este plan. Hemos mostrado que el sistema de salud es suficientemente robusto. El grueso de la población ha sido muy receptiva con las medidas de prevención. Creo que no podemos retrasar el regreso de los niños a la escuela”.
Eso sí, Arguedas, considera que hay que tomar en cuenta varios factores para que el retorno a clases bajo esa modalidad sea exitoso.
«Pienso que hay varios elementos clave. Uno de ellos, el primero, es que debe ser de manera gradual. No es que vamos a volver como antes. Lo otro es que tiene que ser diferenciada: no le podemos exigir lo mismo a una escuela con todas las condiciones de planta física y logística que a una que no las tiene. Lo otro, es que tiene que ser en todos los casos con un aforo reducido, y recomendaciones importantes, como que el sistema educativo tiene que ser flexible”, acotó la profesional en salud.
“Habrá unos niños de la clase que se puedan incorporar a la forma híbrida y otros que no, y dar flexibilidad en esto a los padres. ¿Por qué? Porque en algunos casos, me preocupa si ese niño convive en el hogar con personas de alto riesgo. Ahí hay que dar la flexibilidad y hacer una evaluación del contexto familiar, caso por caso, para recomendar en cuáles”, añadió.
Pero, ¿hay algún riesgo real para los pequeños de regresar a las aulas?
“Los niños usualmente tienen una evolución de la enfermedad (Covid-19) más benigna. Un 90% de las infecciones son leves, un 35% es parecido a los adultos, que puede ser asintomática. La principal complicación asociada al covid es el síndrome inflamatorio multisistémico, que se presenta en niños sin condiciones predisponentes. Esa es la más temible. Nosotros tenemos cerca de 30 niños con este síndrome detectado en el país. Gracias a Dios, todos han salido bien”, explicó Arguedas.
La directora del HNN brindó varias recomendaciones al personal docente, administrativo y a los familiares de los estudiantes para mitigar el riesgo de contagio con algunos detalles pediátricos a partir del conocimiento sobre la socialización de los pequeños.
“En todo momento que cuiden a los menores ellos deben cerciorarse de que tengan la cara cubierta con la mascarilla, que no se toquen la cara, que practiquen la higiene de manos y mantengan la distancia. Por nuestra experiencia hospitalaria, es importante vigilar los tiempos de comida, porque ahí es cuando se quitan la protección fácilmente y se corre mayor riesgo de contagio. Esos tiempos de comida deben ser muy supervisados”, señaló la doctora.
“El otro punto: la interacción se debe dar en áreas muy ventiladas, en la medida de lo posible. En las escuelas se pueden mantener puertas y ventanas abiertas, con un aforo menor. Y algo muy importante, aprendido de las experiencias de los hospitales: no se vale que esto se aplique solo con los niños y que luego los maestros se reúnan por separado, porque se pueden dar brotes entre funcionarios. Estas reuniones presenciales entre docentes tienen que ser supervisadas y protocolizadas”, concluyó.
