Informe del Vaticano señala que Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI sabían de violaciones contra menores
Encubrimiento en la Iglesia Católica. No indagaron más pese a que fueron varias denuncias. En un informe de 450 páginas, elaborado a pedido de Francisco, la Santa Sede reconoció los crímenes de pederastia cometidos por el excardenal Theodore McCarrick.
Este martes 10 de noviembre, el Vaticano publicó la investigación sobre el exarzobispo de Washington Theodore McCarrick (90), expulsado por el papa Francisco por violación sexual contra menores. El documento explica que el papa argentino conocía “solo de oídas” su “comportamiento inmoral con adultos” y que Juan Pablo II y Benedicto XVI, pese a las continuas denuncias, dejaron pasar el asunto al ser mal informados o no tener pruebas ciertas.
Para esta investigación judicial de 450 páginas ―que ha durado dos años y que fue ordenada por Francisco en un gesto inédito―, la Santa Sede asevera que no se ha puesto ningún límite y que documentos de todos sus departamentos, la Secretaria de Estado y la nunciatura han sido consultados.
Fueron cerca de 90 entrevistas y 30 horas de grabaciones las que dieron cuenta de estos crímenes de pederastia dentro de la Iglesia Católica. El informe también admitió que el ascenso al poder de Theodore McCarrick fue posible bajo tres pontificados, los cuales desestimaron los testimonios de varios seminaristas y otras víctimas.
Theodore McCarrick desempeñó por décadas un papel clave en la recaudación de fondos para el Vaticano por parte de donantes estadounidenses adinerados. Se hacía llamar ‘Tío Ted’ y fue despojado de su título de cardenal en 2018 y de su condición de sacerdote en 2019.
Esa decisión fue tomada al término de la investigación iniciada por el arzobispado de Nueva York, tras la denuncia en 2017 de un hombre que acusaba al prelado de haber abusado sexualmente de él en 1970.
La investigación, según cómo ha sido redactada, apunta un sistema durante años de mala información por parte de los obispos y los nuncios al papa, de desestimación de las denuncias anónimas por parte de las víctimas, de superficialidad y de falta de investigación de una conducta considerada entonces impropia, pero que en realidad escondía reiterados abusos sexuales y de poder de un verdadero depredador.
La Santa Sede ha asumido sus “errores” tras considerar “simples rumores” las informaciones sobre pederastia cometidas por sus representantes.
